Martin Meredith in his book “the State of Africa: A History of 50 Years of Independence” got it right when he said the cause of Africa’s pain was (very largely) its corrupt, tyrannical, incompetent thieving vampire-like leaders!
Strong words? Perhaps!
Yet, when one looks at the celebrity status accorded to a convicted fraudster such as Yengeni (also Boesak, Winnie Mandela, and even members of parliament ) by members and offers bearers of the ANC, one seriously has to question whether they have the moral bearings and ethical standards, which make them suitable for public office.
The fact is that corruption is not, as many politicians seem to believe, just another mechanism for the redistribution of wealth. It is simply just another form of theft.
What makes corruption by public officials, even more sleazy, is that every dollar they hijack is money being stolen from the most vulnerable and the poorest of the poor. It is money that is being diverted from health, education, social welfare, and other actions aimed at alleviating the misery of the poorest into the pockets of frequently, morally depraved, fat cats. In short, it actually entrenches poverty and the sight of prominent politicians, and office bearers in the ruling party kowtowing to and bootlicking common criminals is a manifestation of moral bankruptcy.

Let’s please not get too bitter and twisted on this one. After all, he’s not a murderer or a rapist. Think of other bigwigs in the ANC that have gotten, and are still getting, away with much worse things. Also, taxpayer’s money is being saved by not treating him like royalty in that fancy jail for a moment longer than necessary. The one thing that is of concern is: what happens to him now? Will he get his old job back? I should think not, seeing he served time in jail. But you never know with these guys, do you?

Yes. Also, out on parole every weekend from now one, including Christmas and New Year.

‘Doing time’ has a whole new meaning in the parallel universe which our political masters and their sycophantic hangers-on live in.
