Overheard At DA HQ 4

Posted by Farrel Tue, 14 Mar 2006 17:57:00 GMT

NoooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooo…

But seriously, if this is true the DA must be sweating bullets. They will have been made to look like complete idiots, will have potentially lost the only avenue to demonstrate to voters their value and the local elections will in actual fact have turned out to be a shambles for them.

The ID are going to leave a few of their supporters scratching their heads though.

The Cape Town council will convene tomorrow to elect the new mayor.

Update: ANC set to rule the city with ID, Cape Town mayor still uncertain

    Yeah, exciting, isn’t it?

Rumour has it that the media leak about the ANC/ID deal came from ID councillors following an insurrection when the larger part of their councillors found out Patricia was hatching a deal with the ANC. She subsequently came on Cape Talk, denied everything, and accused Mike Wills of stitching her up with a media conspiracy.

After 10am today, the Cape Town council elects a speaker. We’ll see how things work out after that.

Overheard at DA HQ in actuality: YEEEEEEEEESSSSS!!!

Got the Speaker’s position in the bag for the coalition. Next stop: Mayor Helen Zille. (JUST.)

Are the DA and FF+ in formal coalition? The ANC is going to love using that as ammunition in their ‘DA is racist’ sloganeering.

A deal’s apparently been worked out; we shall see who’s in as soon as Helen appoints the city government. Whatever the status of the other parties, they must at least have agreed to support the government, if not actually to participate.

Voting in the chamber suggests that the ANC and the ID are casting their ballots together, and everyone else (including PAC?... amazingly) voted for Helen.

So you think the ANC will call me a racist? It’ll happen anyway – and you know and I know it’s crude, rude, and untrue. The city needs a government, and we’ll do the job; and the ANC needs its pathetic excuses why they’re not doing it – and why they never actually did do it.

I hope this’ll be the last we’ll hear of Nomaindia Mfeketo.

Breaking: the ID’s just nominated Simon Grindrod as Deputy Mayor, with the ANC seconding him. Fascinating. So they are working together after all…
